MGGP S.A. was asked to conduct an analysis regarding the Prądnik Korzkiewski reservoir, which in the 2016 Flood Risk Management Plan was proposed as a dry flood retention reservoir. In the current update, it has been labeled as a water reservoir. This sparked significant public opposition, as concerns arose that a constantly filled retention reservoir would alter the landscape and damage natural elements of the Ojcowski National Park, where it is located. The mayor of Wielka Wieś municipality, aware of the flood risk in the Prądnik valley, tasked us with finding an alternative flood storage capacity in the upper part of the catchment area. This was aimed at finding arguments to justify abandoning the controversial investment and additionally protecting the residents of Sułoszowa, Skała, and Wielka Wieś from floods, a task not addressed by the Prądnik Korzkiewski reservoir.
After 3 months of intensive fieldwork, modeling, and several consultative meetings with the authorities of the concerned municipalities, the management of the Ojcowski National Park, and the Regional Water Management Board in Kraków, including involvement of the Minister of Infrastructure, we have found a solution that combines flood management goals with environmental objectives. This solution involves the construction of several smaller dry reservoirs in non-conflicting locations. Specifically, we proposed two structures to be built at the site of existing ponds near the Castle in Pieskowa Skała. Renovating these ponds will restore their natural functions and provide additional flood retention capacity. In mid-August, our concept was accepted by the local government of Wielka Wieś municipality.
