Poland – Lithuania Gas Pipeline

Supervision for GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. in the scope of a strategic investment – Construction of the POLAND-LITHUANIA GAS PIPELINE – Northern Section (GIPL, Gas Interconnection Poland – Lithuania)
The total length of the Polish-Lithuanian gas interconnection is approximately 508 km, with a diameter of DN700 and a maximum operating pressure of 8.4 MPa. In Poland, the pipeline spans 343 km from the compressor station in Hołowczyce to the border, and in Lithuania, it covers 165 km from the border to the Jauniunai compressor station. Due to its length, the GIPL has been divided into two sections: southern and northern. The northern section is about 185 km long and will be located in the Podlaskie and Warmian-Masurian voivodeships. The pipeline, with a diameter of DN700 mm, will pass through 5 counties and 16 municipalities. As part of its construction, several aboveground facilities will also be built to support the proper and safe operation of the infrastructure. These include Valve and Vent Assemblies (VVA), located along the pipeline route at intervals of approximately 20-30 km, along with access roads and connections to the power grid.

The northern part of the Poland-Lithuania gas pipeline consists of three construction sections:
1) Section (approx. 61 km) – TASK 1 – from Valve and Vent Assembly (ZZU) Rudka-Skroda to Valve and Vent Assembly (ZZUP) Konopki in Kolno and Grajewo counties, Podlaskie Voivodeship [field office of WNI in Łomża];
2) Section (approx. 77 km) – TASK 2 – from Valve and Vent Assembly (ZZUP) Konopki to Valve and Vent Assembly (ZZUP) Kuków, Grajewo and Suwałki counties (Podlaskie Voivodeship) and Ełk county (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship) [field office of WNI in Ełk];
3) Section (approx. 47 km) – TASK 3 – from Valve and Vent Assembly (ZZUP) Kuków to the Poland-Lithuania border in Suwałki and Sejny counties (Podlaskie Voivodeship) [field office of WNI in Suwałki].

The aim of the project is:
– construction of a cross-border connection between the transmission systems of Poland and Lithuania;
– diversification of natural gas supplies to the Baltic countries;
– elimination of 'energy islands';
– integration of the Baltic countries into the European Union gas market;
– ensuring access to the global LNG market, for example through the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście;
– enabling the development of the distribution network in the northeastern part of the country;
– increasing the competitiveness of the region by creating new transmission infrastructure.

The above investment will contribute to integrating the European gas system and shaping a liberalized gas market in northeastern Europe. Gas delivery through the newly constructed pipeline will diversify supply routes to the Baltic countries. Implementing the investment will also contribute to improving the environment and climate. The ability to replace solid fuels with gas, especially in cogeneration systems that produce both heat and energy, will improve societal living standards. In summary, the entire project will enhance the attractiveness of northeastern Poland for new investments.
